Academy Students Triumph in the Science Playoffs

Canterbury Academy students have once again triumphed at the annual KM Bright Sparks finals. Taking on eight other teams, predominantly formed of sixth form students, our team of Alice Shaw (Year 9), Jack Wimble Roberts (Year 9), Auryn Memmot (Year 9), and Ivana Hristova (Year 10) clinched second prize. Their innovative water filter design will now form a prototype which will be tested in a medical centre in Cameroon.

Their project, an ambitious and potentially life-changing design, revolves around the use of a graphene water filter to counter dirty water. Furthe

r modifications introduced a silver filter which prevented the entry of potentially harmful strains of antibiotics and possible contamination of the water supply with E.coli. Countering the spread of water-borne diseases in the developing world is a truly impressive and important contribution - exceptional work by Year 9 and Year 10 students.

Achieving second prize also means that they will be given the opportunity to spend a day of further research at Pfizer's laboratories and work with researchers and scientists to improve their design.

Please do congratulate our scientific trailblazers when you see them in school.

We should also acknowledge the support from Lucy Johnstone and Alex Punyer, who worked tirelessly to make this project come to fruition.
