Under 15 Cricket Team knock Kent College out of County Cup

In a pulsating encounter where momentum changed regularly, Canterbury High School’s Under 15 cricket team narrowly beat Kent College to go into the semi-finals of the Kent Cup.

In last year’s competition, Kent College had thrashed us by 70 runs with their spinners dominating our batters. Learning from last year’s defeat, Canterbury High started in positive fashion against the two opposition spinners and a 50 run opening partnership between Harry Divers and Bradley Goldsack set a stable platform for the innings.

Divers was dismissed for 28 before Jordan Gillmore fell first ball but the mini collapse was halted by a good stand between Goldsack and Harrison Pack. Goldsack was dismissed for 49 and it was only a late flurry by Andrew Llong that enabled Canterbury High to reach 117 off their 20 overs. This was probably about a par score on a sometimes challenging pitch.

Kent College got off to a good start and were already 50 for 2 in the 7th over. This was when the game was turned by an incredibly hostile and skilful bowling display from Harrison Pack who took three wickets in two overs to destroy the opposition top order. Pack clean bowled three batters with unplayable deliveries and changed the momentum completely. However, a sensible partnership got Kent College back into the game and at 80 for 5 with 7 overs left, the game was in the balance.

Joe Coleman and Harry Divers then took crucial wickets which pushed Kent College back once more. A last wicket partnership from Kent College’s tail enders edged them back into contention and with 9 balls left, they required 9 to win. Anxiety had spread and there was a dropped catch plus some overthrows as the tension increased. With the game evenly poised, Pack had the final word and clean bowled the Kent College number 10 to seal a monumental victory.

Our team consisted of a combination of students across three different year groups. They fought brilliantly and worked as a team throughout. Kent College were finalists in this competition last year so this is a significant achievement for our school. We will now play the winners of the quarter final between Sutton Valence and Sir Joseph Williamson. Please congratulate these students when you see them around school.
