Year 8 Handball Success

Canterbury Academy's Handball season has begun and we got off to another flying start in the District competition. After last year’s success, when three teams reached the County Finals and the U13 girls’ team became South East Champions, we are expecting some positive performances from our teams.

They did not let us down as the year 8 boys and girls teams competed in the District qualifiers and both won their respective competitions on Tuesday 17th November.

The girls’ team had a tough group to qualify from as it included strong teams from Herne Bay High (HBH) and Westlands. Despite this being their first experience of competitive handball, our girls started with a 7-0 win against SCC. Two difficult draws against HBH (4-4) and Westlands (2-2) led to an interesting potential three way tie at the top. With this in mind, Canterbury Academy finished the tournament with a 7-2 win in their final game to secure a top place finish on goal difference, having scored twenty goals and conceded only eight. They have now qualified for the County Finals, which will take place early next year.

The success of the girls was mirrored by the boys. Again, this was their first experience of competitive handball but they blew the other schools away with some exceptional performances. They scored over thirty goals and only conceded three. They comfortably won the group with wins against Herne Bay High (6-1), SCC (10-0) and Borden Grammar School (10-1). This led to a semi-final against SCC's 1st team which we won 4-1 in a fierce encounter. Our team showed excellent professionalism to execute their game plans and made it through to the final. The final resulted in another win. The boys won 4-0 against Fulston Manor and they will also go into the County Finals.

There were exceptional performances from Tamara, Paige, Jordan and Kieran. The list below is of the students who represented the two teams. Please congratulate them all and wish them the best of luck for the next round.
