Sixth Form sporting success!

Clean Sweep for Sixth Form Sports Teams

Our basketball, football and rugby sides all performed impressively this week and as a result, our first teams won each game.

Our Sixth Form Basketball Academy picked up an 86-70 win over Copleston in Ipswich in their opening Elite Academies Basketball League game.

Canterbury made a perfect start, racing out to a 8-0 lead including two 3 pointers from standout guard, James Lloyd. Copleston recovered to close the gap to 21-17 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, things heated up as both sides continued to score. There was an impressive shooting performance from Canterbury shooting guard Oliver Waymark, who ended up with 7 three pointers for the game shooting 7 for 11 from behind the arc and finishing the game with a team high 24 points. The lead had stretched to 8 by half time.

Through the second half, we gradually continued to extend our lead beyond 20 points before a late rally from Copleston reduced the gap slightly.

In addition to Waymark's 24 points, James Lloyd and Ryan Murunge scored 20 points each in a balanced effort.

Head Coach, Jesse Sazant was really pleased with the result, considering the injuries and foul trouble they had.

"The guys really stepped up today. The energy, focus and commitment was exactly what we wanted, dealing with missing two starters due to injury and having all of our key players in foul trouble throughout the game."

James Lloyd added to his coach’s comments by saying.

"Overall the win was a really good boost to the team and a step in the right direction to begin the season. I was proud of the way we passed the ball and played together. Hopefully we can take this into our next game against Harris."

The Rugby Academy fielded two sides yesterday and the 1st XV beat Ravenswood 17-12 and the 2nd XV lost to Sir Roger Manwoods 34-17. The 1st XV now includes more students from Canterbury High’s sixth form rather than just being a Simon Langton based side.

The Football Academy recovered from going 2-0 down to Future Sports Trust Academy based at Cornwallis in Maidstone. Some harsh words from Head Coach, Dean Grant, at half-time had an immediate impact and an outstanding second half meant that Canterbury Academy won 7-2.

Harry Phipps scored 4 goals, Nathan French claimed 2 and there was another from Matt Blackmore. Dean was particularly impressed by Nathan who showed great self-discipline in this game. Nathan’s discipline has not been one of his strong points in the last few years but yesterday was really encouraging so please congratulate him if you see him around school.

The side now go into the next round of the cup. Details to follow.
