Community Football

Friday Night Lights is a community football project delivered by Kent County Council and the Canterbury Academy. The project aim is to provide positive activities for young people on a Friday evening to promote community cohesion and reduce antisocial behaviour.

Friday Night Lights accommodates young people aged 13-19 alongside professionals who work with adolescents in a mix of 5 a side matches. The games are played on the Lifestyle Fitness MUGA pitches located on the Canterbury Academy site between 1900 and 2100. There is no cost and no need to come as part of a team of 5 as sides are made up on the evening. Males and females are welcome and appropriate clothing and footwear for AstroTurf football must be worn. Once participant numbers increase the onsite Youth Centre will also be open for use.

"I’d like to come back again in a few weeks’ time and maybe play on a monthly basis, as I think it’s a brilliant idea. It was great to see lads from different backgrounds forming friendships and for professionals/practitioners to act as positive role models"

– Paul Manwaring (Early Help and Preventative Services)
