SOCIAL SCIENCES
SENIOR SCHOOL - GCSE COURSES
-
Politics
The social sciences are only available at Senior School level as GCSE subjects and in the sixth form. See below for full details.
PSYCHOLOGY
GCSE PSYCHOLOGY involves original research looking at issues such as aggression, stress, conformity, fear and phobias, as well as to use your knowledge from these to complete your own piece of psychological research.
A number of different approaches are studied including:
• Social Psychology
• Behavioural Psychology
• Developmental Psychology
• Individual Differentiation
• Cognitive Psychology
• Bio-psychology
Through each approach, students are able to learn, apply and evaluate the different psychological theories and studies which help explain a range of different behaviours like unusual phobias, transgender issues and human obedience.
EXAMINATION BOARD INFORMATION
LAW
Studying law gives students an understanding of the role of the law in today's society. It is impossible to watch a news programme or read a newspaper and not be aware of how often the law has a part to play in all our lives. Students will acquire knowledge across a range of legal topics including:
• Criminal Law
• The Law of Tort
• Family Law
In addition to the new knowledge students will develop broader skills such as selection, analysis, critical thinking, debating and decision making.
SOCIOLOGY
In Sociology, students gain an insight into what influences people, and why people within different cultures and societies behave as they do. Aspiring sociologists explore what shapes our identities and compare different cultures. Students also conduct research into group behaviour and learn to apply statistical knowledge in a sociological context.
Sociology has celebrated success at both GCSE and A-level, with many students going on to study at university.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Sociology is not available in middle school, however, there are a range of clubs, such as criminology, that students who wish to engage with these subjects are welcome to attend.
We also run competitions that are open to middle school students.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Sociology is a full GCSE subject. Assessment is undertaken through two written examinations at the end of year 11, following the WJEC programme of study. There is no coursework for this subject.
SIXTH FORM
At A-level, students follow the AQA programme of study over 1 year for AS or two years for the full A-level.
