EXAMINATION BOARD INFORMATION

SIXTH FORM

Science, post-16, is popular as we are able to offer a range of different subjects including:

  • AS/A2 Biology

  • AS Chemistry

  • AS Physics

  • AS/A2 Applied Science

KS5 biology, chemistry and physics follow AQA. Applied Science is delivered using OCR.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

In years 7, 8 and 9 science follows a two year scheme of work. This allows personalised learning through differentiation and early progression onto more challenging GCSE content.

Students following the Langton pathway work through a more challenging scheme which better prepares these students for the rigours of GCSE triple science.

From year 9 all students will follow combined science. This consists of six examinations (two in each of the sciences; chemistry, biology and pyhsics). Students will earn a double award GCSE with this qualification. Students have the option in year 9 to follow triple science which consists of more demanding content and additional examinations in all three science disciplines. Triple science students will earn seperate GCSE qualifications in the three sciences; chemistry, biology and physics.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Students follow GCSE core science as a minimum standard at the Canterbury High School. The core science GCSE consists of a biology, chemistry and physics exam each worth 25% of the overall grade. The final 25% is comprised of a controlled assessment of science practical skills.

All science exams in years 10 and 11 are examined by AQA.

The aim of the science department is to promote excellent teaching,  stimulating experiences and challenge for our students in a supportive, nurturing environment. The science faculty believes in the principle of tailoring the curriculum to suit all students.

This belief has meant results at GCSE have been above the national average for the past five years at both core and additional science. The science department provides a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities for students including the James Irwin observatory, managed in partnership with the Mid Kent Astronomical Society (MKAS).  Collaboration using the James Irwin Observatory has taken place on a number of events including Star Gazing Live, astro camps and summer festivals.
