MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

DANCE - In Years 7 and 8 students are involved in a variety of projects that explore a range of Dance styles, such as street dance, African dance, lyrical and contemporary. Students learn important dance terminology and build knowledge on choreography and have the opportunity to perform, choreograph and work on their dance techniques, working in groups and independently to improve their skills.

The Canterbury Academy embraces the Arts and recognises them as a real talent amongst the students. This ethos is reflected in the school being awarded an Artsmark Gold status. 

 

Students experience performing in front of a variety of audiences and are given opportunities to gain a range of additional qualifications in the Arts to those typically provided in secondary schools. 

 

As well as benefiting from weekly drama and music lessons that all Canterbury Academy students enjoy, gifted and talented students of drama, dance or music can also access:

The Canterbury Primary School

SIXTH FORM with

Post-16 students interested in a career in performing arts can audition for The Canterbury Institute for Performing Arts.  CPA works in partnership with a variety of professional organisations and agencies. This provides a unique combination of tuition by industry professionals and access to state of the art faciities.  

 

Students benefit from top level training in their chosen art combined with an unrivalled academic curriculum leading to advanced level qualifications.

 

In dance Year 12 and 13 students follow the BTEC and AQA AS Level courses as well as working with Cascade Dance Company, a professional working dance company.

DRAMA - Year 7 and 8 students learn about a variety of topics, styles and genres such as Shakespeare, script work, mask work, improvisation and physical theatre. During their programme of study they explore the key elements of drama and how to communicate through performance as well as how to analyse and evaluate drama work. 

DRAMA - Year 9, 10 and 11 students follow the Edexcel GCSE drama course which involves the following weightings:

 

30% Unit 1 Practical exam and written assessment.

30% Unit 2 Practical exam and written assessment.

40% Unit 3 Live performance externally assessed.

 

DRAMA - Year 12 follow AS drama and theatre studies through Edexcel. They study two texts practically as well as submitting written exploration notes. The AS finishes with a performance unit where groups perform a scripted piece of drama.

 

Year 13 complete A2 drama and theatre studies. They will work on a devised piece and a final written exam.

 

BTEC Extended Diploma Performing Arts Acting - Year 12 and Year 13 follow a pathway that covers a total of 18 units. They will study improvisation, acting styles, TIE as as well as voice work and acting for camera. All delivered by industry professionals.

SENIOR SCHOOL

 

DANCE - Year 9, 10 and 11 students follow the AQA GCSE Dance course which involves the following weightings: 20% Set Dance. 20% Written paper, 

15% Group Dance and 45% Solo choreography.

 

Students learn how to choreograph group and solo pieces using a range of choreographic devices. They study professional works by well-known choreographers to build dance appreciation and develop their knowledge. Students are encouraged to be creative and original in their dance work.

 

In years 10 and 11 students can also study GCSE Drama which has always been a popular option and has enjoyed a great deal of success over the last few years.

 

BTEC level 2 Diploma in Performing Arts (Performance) is also offered to students in order to meet the increasing demand for a course which uses drama, dance and music in an interdisciplinary way. Students on the course have achieved extremely well with 100% pass rate.

 

 

A 15% MUSIC SELECTIVE SCHOOL

 

Performing Arts comprises the 3 main disciplines of

Drama, Dance and Music.

 

The Canterbury High School is 15% Music Selective

Among the best in Kent, facilities include 2 drama studios fully blacked out and rigged with professional sound rigs and stage lighting systems, 3 dance studios with sprung wooden floors, full lengths mirrors, ballet bars and surround sound systems.

 

A professional recording studio including state of the art, hi-spec recording equipment, a separate control room and performance space for professional quality recordings. An Apple Music Technology suite with 15 desktop macs for both digital and analogue recordings, a separate keyboard lab with 15 Yamaha keyboards for general teaching and 2 other main teaching rooms fully equipped with a massive range of instruments.
