GEOGRAPHY

Geography is a subject that looks at the relationship between human populations and the physical environment at a variety of scales from local to global.

SENIOR SCHOOL

 

GCSE Geography - AQA Syllabus B

 

In the first half of year 9, students learn key geographical concepts and develop the skills and vocabulary required for GCSE though a local study that includes a fieldwork assessment. 

 

The content of the GCSE course is taught over 2 ½ years with frequent assessment to allow students to monitor their own progress and learn how to achieve their best on the final examination.

 

Examination 75%: Coastal Environments, Urban Environments, Natural Hazards, Global Tourism

Fieldwork controlled assessment task 15%

Research controlled assessment task 10%

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

In years 7, 8 and 9 students learn about the physical processes that shape landscapes and how people interact with their environment. The year 7 modules include weather, weathering and erosion, settlements, tourism and development, an introduction to China, and volcanoes and earthquakes.  Year 7 finishes with a research and design project on a suitable football stadium for Canterbury.

 

The year 8 programme of study begins with an in-depth study of rivers, including a fieldwork investigation.  Year 8 students then review the human geography topics from year 7 through a case study on Kenya before beginning an extended module on extreme environments: tropical rainforests, hot deserts and polar regions. Their final project is to design a research station for Antarctica. 

 

In History you will learn about Medieval Britain, Native American History, and modern conflicts such as WW1 and WW2. In GCSE History you will journey in medicine through time.  Starting with prehistoric medicine through to the Greek and Roman empires right up until modern medical techniques.

 

Students study a range of time periods in history while applying key skills such as chronology and cause and consequence.

SIXTH FORM 

 

Students currently study the OCR A level syllabus in collaboration with the Langton School for Boys.

The AS units are Germany 1933-63 and the Stuarts and the Civil War and are each worth 25% of the final A level grade.

The A2 units are the synoptic paper, Civil Rights in America 1865-1997, and the coursework unit is the War in Vietnam, worth 30% and 20% of the final grade respectively.  

 

 

SENIOR SCHOOL

In Key Stage 4, students start the course in Year 9 and begin to hone the skills necessary for GCSE by looking at a comparative study of Greece and Rome and a depth study of African American history and Civil Rights.

 

The OCR GCSE course entails an overview study of Medicine Through Time starting at Ancient Medicine and covering all the key developments through to modern and high-tech medicine They will then complete an indepth study of Germany from 1919-1945  looking at the outcomes of WW1, the Weimar Republic, The Rise of the Nazis, Hitler’s consolidation of Power and Germany at War.

 

Students will also complete a controlled assessment on Rochester Castle and its context in history. The controlled assessment involves visiting a site of historical significance and placing it in its local and national context. 

 

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL 

Students have two lessons a fortnight in the Middle School. In year 7 they study Romans, 1066, Medieval Life, the Tudors, the Stuarts and the Civil War and the Industrial Revolution.

 

In year 8 they study the causes of WW1, key events of WW1, the causes of WW2 and the Rise of Hitler, key events of WW2, the Holocaust and the Cold War.

 

This course of study aims to provide students with a good grounding for GCSE and an overview and good understanding of key events and civilasations throughout history.

 

Religious Education

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

In RE students study a wide variety of religions, religious practices and ethical issues over the two year Middle School period.

 

In Senior School, the GCSE course entails an in-depth study of two religions’ teachings and followers’ attitudes to ethical issues. 

 

Religious Studies has been running successfully as a GCSE for four years. 

 

MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

Students have two lessons a fortnight in the Middle School. In Year 7 they study Sikhism, The Life of Jesus, Judaism, Pilgrimages, Festivals and Hinduism.

 

In Year 8 they study Moral Issues, Buddhism, Islam, Prejudice, Is Religion Dangerous, Myths and Mysteries.

 

Students learn about the teachings and practices of different religions as well as gaining an understanding of the impact of religion on society and their own lives. 

SENIOR SCHOOL

 

OCR Religious Studies B: Philosophy and Ethics.

 

In year 9 students start to hone the skills necessary for GCSE by looking at ancient religions and alternative philosophies that have existed or exist in society today.

 

They study Islam in some depth, both the philosophy of the religion such as the reasons why people believe in God and what the teachings are on good and evil in the world and what influences Muslims’ ethical choices. For example, attitudes to human relationships and attitudes to peace and war.

 

Over the next two years Islam is contrasted with the teachings of Christianity.

SIXTH FORM 

 

In 2015 we are offering AQA Religious Studies at AS and A level.

Four units are studied over the two years, each worth 25% of the final A level result.

 

Units offered include Philosophy, Ethics, Religious Ethics and Religion and Human Experience.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

The MFL team aims to provide high quality language teaching in a positive and encouraging environment, leading to high levels of progress and achievement; to foster greater empathy between cultures, as well as developing communication skills and encouraging our students to contribute positively to the world community that they are part of.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

All students study French and Spanish in years 7 and 8.They have three lessons a fortnight of each language.

 

At the end of Year 8 students can decide to continue to study French or/ and Spanish, and are given the option of taking it as a GCSE subject up to year 11.

 

The MFL department offers a 'Language Club' every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at lunch where students are given an opportunity to work on Learning Practice and GCSE exam preparation.

 

We also teach Arabic on Monday lunchtimes.

 

Our link with Langton Grammar School for Boys has seen opportunities develop between middle school students in both schools on a regular basis through linguistic events shared between our 2 schools.

SENIOR SCHOOL

 

In years 9, 10 and 11 students are given the option of taking French and/ or Spanish as a GCSE subject. The GCSE courses run over 3 years and the students have four lessons a fortnight in their chosen language/languages.

SIXTH FORM 

 

At present, lessons in French and Spanish are delivered by Kent Language School, our partner Language school, which also offers  a variety of languages and qualifications for our EAL students.
