Design and Technology develops a broad range of skills, including problem solving, creativity, independent learning, innovation, presentation and making skills which are excellent preparation for a wide range of future careers and higher education courses.
SIXTH FORM
AQA Product Design A-Level is now available to KS5 students.
EXAMINATION BOARD
SENIOR SCHOOL
Students currently study AQA Design & Technology Resistant Materials. This qualification has a weighting of 60% controlled assessments and 40% externally set and marked written exam paper.
Support and intervention is offered for students Monday and Tuesdays after school until 5pm.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Year 7 students have the opportunity to use a range of hand tools, equipment and machinery to make projects using wood and plastic. Students follow the design process where they generate ideas, develop these to a final design, make their product and evaluate their work.
Students will develop their practical skills and confidence in the workshop by working safely independently and in groups. Technical vocabulary is introduced from the beginning of year 7 and developed throughout year 8. Topics covered are different properties of wood and plastic, joining techniques, finishes, design periods and health and safety. The students will make a door wedge and a Memphis clock/mirror.
During Year 8 there is greater emphasis on accuracy, independent working, quality control, creativity in design and learning about the properties of materials in more depth. Students build upon their practical skills and consideration of quality of finish. A metal working project is introduced in the form of copper jewellery enamelling project and basic electronics is also covered in the form of a mini torch.
Tech Club is run Monday lunchtimes for students to come and work in the workshop.
Students will reinforce practical skills and gain confidence making food products independently using basic kitchen equipment and the cooker safely.
Students are introduced to sensory vocabulary to help describe food.

GCSE HOME ECONOMICS
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The Food & Nutrition scheme of work has been developed to provide all year 7 students with the opportunity to learn how to cook, as well as make informed decisions about their diet and health.
Topics covered include: 5-a-day, the importance of breakfast, staple foods, weighing measuring & baking, hygiene, safety and meals for mates.
During Year 8 there is a greater emphasis on finishing techniques for food presentation and learning about the properties of ingredients. Students continue to gain confidence in the food room, independently producing a selection of dishes with accuracy, paying attention to the quality of finish and function, building their knowledge of the nutritional value of ingredients, and how to adapt and change recipes.
They taste and compare products using sensory analysis completing a star profile.
Topics covered include: methods of cake making, dietary guidelines, multi-cultural dishes, special diets and dietary needs of individuals.
An afterschool cooking club is held Tuesday 3.15 – 4.30pm for Middle School students.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Students currently study OCR Home Economic: Food & Nutrition. This qualification has a weighting of 60% controlled assessments and 40% externally set and marked written exam paper.
From 2015 we will be introducing NCFE Food & Cookery. This qualification consists of four units, three of which are internally assessed portfolio of evidence worth 75% and one unit is an assessment paper that is externally set and marked.
Support and intervention is offered for students period 6 every day.
SIXTH FORM
Due to the increased interest and popularity in this subject area we are introducing OCR A-level from September 2015.

TEXTILES
Students enjoy numerous opportunities to visit professional fashion shows, create and perform their own fashion show and take part in residentials to destinations of their own choice.
MIDDLE SCHOOL - Year 7
The scheme of work has been developed to provide all year 7 students with the opportunity to learn basic sewing skills including how to use a sewing machine safely and correctly, design skills and pattern cutting skills.
Students reinforce their practical skills and gain confidence when using basic Textiles equipment. Students analyse existing projects and understand the 'fit-for-purpose' look at natural fibres and their properties.
MIDDLE SCHOOL - Year 8
During year 8 students follow the design process more in connection with the GCSE curriculum and learn how to develop their ideas. Students learn printing techniques, block printing and mono printing. They quality control their work and gain in confidence in their practical lessons and are taught to use equipment safely and independently.
Students continue to develop their fibre and fabric knowledge on manmade fibres and their properties.
An open door policy on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for lesson catch up or textile club activities. 3pm - 4pm.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Students currently study Design Technology: Textiles.
This qualification has a weighting of 60% controlled assessments and 40% externally set and marked written exam paper.
From 2015 we will be introducing NCFE Creative Craft Level 2. This qualification consists of four units, three of which are internally assessed portfolios of evidence worth 75% and one unit of a 30 hour controlled assessment that is marked internally.
An open door policy on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday for GCSE catch up 3pm - 4pm.
SIXTH FORM
Textiles is offered at AS and A2 level.
AQA Product Design: Textiles.
This qualification has a weighting of 50% coursework and 50% written exam that is externally marked.
