Working in partnership with Simon Langton Boys to provide a grammar

school band for boys and girls in a comprehensive school for all talents

HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES

The successful house system will also operate in the Sixth Form and elected house captains will represent their house as part of developing an understanding of democracy  and will also represent the academy at important events.

In the first election ever, students from the whole academy had the opportunity to vote for their favourite candidate, each representing one of the 4 houses.

With nearly 100 house representatives across the 4 houses our students assist with activities such as tour guiding, interviews of new members of staff, supporting charities with fund raising events such as non-uniform days and our weekly bake sales.

Sixth Form students will become part of this community, offering valuable support and guidance to younger students.

Elections for Sixth Form representatives leads to a school parliament providing leadership opportunities for sixth form students.

SIXTH FORM REPRESENTATIVES

The Sixth Form representatives will be expected to bring the strong house ethos from the middle and senior schools into the Sixth Form with the emphasis on celebration, praise and developing the best in each student.

The existing student voicing will expand into the Sixth Form via the newly elected representatives who will also have the responsibility for raising the profile of the Sixth Form across the school so they are considered an integral part of the house system.

House System

The house system at The Canterbury Academy exists for a variety of reasons. It provides an identity which is important in a big school, and provides opportunities for healthy competition. It is a vehicle which means that all talents can be recognised and all achievement rewarded.

It also provides a structure for students to take responsibility, provides leadership opportunities, creates a  ‘School Parliament’ through which core values such as freedom of speech, tolerance and mutual respect can be developed and reinforced.

The house system is also a way that many of the academy’s range of activities can be organised and promoted. These can be as diverse as charity events, assemblies, election of school parliament, visits and trips and student voicing to aid in decision making throughout the academy.

HOUSES

The house system comprises four houses named after local individuals who represent our school's strengths:
